Annemarie Rebel obtained her PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam on the human medicine topic 'Relapse of bladder cancer'. She then conducted research at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (US) into prostate cancer metastases.
Rebel is director of Wageningen Bioveterinary Research in Lelystad. This institute is part of Wageningen University & Research and focuses on animal health, more specifically on the study, control and prevention of animal diseases.
Rebel is also extraordinary professor of 'Healthy and resilient livestock farming' at Wageningen University & Research. She studies the resilience of animals within the Adaptation Physiology chair group.
Rebel is also chairman of the Netherlands Center of One Health (NCOH).
