Meerburg's expertise lies in the field of (dealing with) pests and horse breeding.
He studied Zootechnics at Wageningen University. He worked in Brussels as the personal assistant to an MEP. After, he joined ID-Lelystad where he did his PhD research on zoonoses (wild rats and mice) for which he obtained his PhD in 2006 at the University of Amsterdam.
Meerburg then worked, among other things, at the Center for Infectious Disease Control of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), as a (senior) researcher at Plant Research International and as head of department at Wageningen Livestock Research. He was director of the 'Kennis- en Adviescentrum Dierplagen' and at 'paardenstamboek KWPN Royal Dutch Sport Horse'. In 2014 he completed his MBA at Nyenrode Business University. He was also chairman of the Members' Council of the Welsh Studbook and a board member of the 'Stichting Zeldzame Huisdierrassen'. He and his wife are the owners of Stoeterij Airborne in Heteren. Since December 1st 2023, Meerburg is head of Bayer Innovation Center Wageningen.
