Wageningen University & Research

Karel de Greef (PhD, 1963) works as an animal scientist at Wageningen Livestock Research. Within his activities and research, his focus lies where animal production systems affect society. Animal welfare (in the broad sense of the word) is often an essential element in this process.

At the systems innovation group of Wageningen Livestock Research, De Greef has developed the animal-centered design approach, resulting in initiatives such as Pigs in Comfort Class and Rondeel laying poultry farming. After many years of being mainly active in pigs-related research, his focus has now shifted to the social aspects for livestock farming in a broader sense. Besides from that, he puts effort in research and innovation in rabbit farming and is actively involved in exploring the social and ethical aspects of livestock breeding.
