Don't let animal welfare get snowed under

The changing climate and the measures we take to combat global warming affect the welfare of animals in livestock farming. In the advisory report Don’t let animal welfare get snowed under the RDA signals and puts on the agenda bottlenecks for production animals that are caused by climate problems.

The climate policy for livestock farming should not only focus on the current form, but also on animal-friendly livestock farming. This could include structural adjustments to housing systems, but also, for example, means of transport, flood defences and breeding objectives. In the pursuit of a sustainable food system, chain parties and stable builders also play an important role.

It is obvious that the central government should take the lead in aligning national climate policy with the upcoming revision of EU animal welfare legislation and with the intended national legislation for animal-friendly livestock farming. This also applies to the coordination of policy implementation by provinces and municipalities.
